Asia's Energy Choices Will Determine Success of Paris Agreement: Pathways to Achieving Eventual Net-Zero Emissions

April 20, 2017
US-Asia Institute, Washington, DC

Panel featured members of parliaments from Indonesia and Pakistan and environment/energy experts from India, China, and the Philippines to discuss future energy options for fast-developing economies. Discussants comprised representatives from the renewable energy finance and World Bank. The session was aimed at drawing the experience and expertise of stakeholders to highlight solutions to accelerate clean energy.

2015 saw two global agreements at the UN on climate change and sustainability. World Bank President Jim Yong Kim forecasts if Asian economies continue on current fossil-fuel path, the Paris Agreement is dead. Asia is the region under greatest environmental stress, but also where renewable energy solutions are rapidly expanding. Countries must finalize their implementation plans for the Paris Agreement. Legislators are key players with oversight of energy policy and final word on national budgets and international finance.
