Key Pollution Challenges Faced by the Tannery Industry in Pakistan

On July 6, 2021 SW-AQA in cooperation with the Pakistan Institute of Development and Economics (PIDE) and the Global Alliance for Health and Pollution (GAHP) organized a stakeholder consultation workshop titled “Potential Solutions to Key Pollution Challenges Faced by The Tannery Industry in Pakistan.”

Ms. Shazia Z. Rafi, President, AQA welcomed the panelists and gave a presentation on the role of the parliamentarians in Clean Air SDGs 2030.

Dr. Nadeem Ul Haque, Vice Chancellor, PIDE gave an overview of the projects related to clean air conducted by PIDE. Mr. Ahmad Rafay Alam, Senior Advisor, AQA gave an introduction to the report titled “Key Pollution Challenges Faced by the Tannery Industry in Pakistan” Mr. Dawar H. Butt, AQA Consultant presented the findings of the report.

Expert presentations were given by Mr. John Keith, Technical Consultant, Pure Earth, Mr. Noman Younis, Environment Protection Department Punjab, Mr. Agha Saiddain, Ex-Chairman, Pakistan Tanners Association, Dr. Imran Saqib Khalid, Director, Governance and Policy, WWF Pakistan - Mr. Azhar-uddin Khan, Managing Director, Cleaner Production Institute. Mr. Asif Nawaz Shah, AQA Research Associate moderated the panel. Mr. Ahmad Rafay Alam, Senior Advisor, AQA opened the floor for Q&A and gave closing remarks.

On 29 July 2021, the Sustainable Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) Programme released a final report titled “Pakistan Tanneries Industry Final Report” available for download. The report was produced by The Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP) and Sustainable World Inc.-Air Quality Asia (SW-AQA). UK Aid from UK Government and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) provided financial and technical support for SMEP.
